Abstract
In modern history, with the totalitarianism of the march of capitalism and imperialism and the competition of the superpowers for domination of countries of influence, waves of mass migration and refugee movements are often observed, accompanied by terms such as terrorism, invasion, Islamization. The rise of right-wing political parties and policies around the world has meant that the language of prejudice and discrimination has become more prominent and evident, and the need to identify and analyse this language, this discourse, has become more important. Discourse plays a key role in both the production and reproduction of racist and xenophobic stereotypes and perceptions. In particular, public political discourse and the way in which politicians address issues relating to refugees and the so-called refugee issue, carry particular weight. The political instrumentalisation of the migrant-refugee issue is given and intensive. In this thesis, we will primarily delve into the concepts of discourse, public discourse, political discourse and hate speech. Then we will talk about racism and its distinctions, in this case liquid racism and institutional racism, and then we will talk about the concept of xenophobia and Islamophobia. Then, relying on the methodology of Critical Discourse Analysis, we will study the public discourse of government officials, of the political party of New Democracy, which has been in power in Greece since June 2019, and whether these statements promote racist or xenophobic attitudes. Finally, the conclusions from the analysis of the speech of the government officials and whether they confirm the research hypothesis will be presented.
