Abstract
Augmented Reality Audio Games are rapidly gaining popularity and technological advancement, offering a new dimension of entertainment and accessibility to players by enriching the real world with virtual auditory information. Mystic Isle: in search of the golden lyre is representative of this category, focusing on exploring the cultural heritage of Corfu. The game utilizes geolocation technology from players' mobile phones to trigger appropriate auditory stimuli along a predefined path of historical points of interest (POIs). Throughout the game, players interact with significant historical figures who provide various insights into the unfolding narrative intertwined with information on themselves and historical landmarks. To witness the audio events players need to be not only in specific places, but also at specific times. Thus, the common audio augmented reality practice of utilizing space as a gameplay element is combined with a novel approach of including time as a decisive factor as well. Last, the general audio content is framed within a medieval environment with elements of fantasy. Through auditory interaction with sound materials combined with unique and innovative sound mechanics, Mystic Isle offers an unprecedented and contemporary interactive experience that could be utilized in an educational and cultural context surrounding the city of Corfu.
