Abstract
Horror literature is an important and dynamic field of literature, which has managed to attract the interest of both readers and researchers worldwide. Although the origins of the genre can be traced back to ancient myth and folklore, the trajectory of modern horror literature internationally has been characterized by constant changes and adaptations over the centuries. By making a historical reference to horror, this paper attempts to highlight the course of development and formation of horror literature, with an emphasis on classic works and authors who have played a key role in shaping the genre as we know it today. In addition, the translation of horror literature in Greece is examined, focusing on the publishers and the strategies they adopt in relation to this particular literary genre, in terms of the titles they choose to publish and the reasons why they do so. At the same time, the theory of translation is examined in general, giving extra attention to the translation of literature, especially the horror genre. Furthermore, the paper examines the particularities and challenges that translators face in this process and the mechanisms used to translate horror between different cultures and languages, in this case the English-Greek language pair. The final part of the paper consists of a questionnaire, designed to reveal the criteria (if any) that translators follow in selecting titles, the challenges they face in translating horror and how they overcome them. Through this approach, the paper aims to highlight the dynamics of the translation of horror literature in Greece and to highlight possible future directions and challenges.
