Abstract
The aim of this research is to focus on the difficulty that translators face in translating these words in the subtitles. The theoretical framework was based on literature review concerning translation, subtitling, profane and taboo words and their categories, as well as the way they are treated in subtitling. For the research part of this work, thirty-one (31) episodes from the American series “Rick and Morty” were selected; it is a sit-com series for adults and a key part of its humour is the use of these words. After observing the Greek subtitles based on the professional subtitling on the Netflix subscription channel, a number of results were reached and quantitative tables were created followed by qualitative commentary. Furthermore, a questionnaire was disseminated, which contained questions about the translation of profane and taboo words in the Greek subtitles, and also the translation choices of these words in the first episode of the series. The results were commented upon and graphs were created with the results. Finally, references have been made to similar surveys in order to observe whether the findings of the present study agree or disagree with previous research conducted by other researchers in other countries.
