Abstract
The researcher developed an action research design aiming to adapt the teaching of music in the context of the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) for a series of 9 weekly lessons in a class in an elementary school. The deductive analysis of the data collected focusing on the guidelines of the UDL assessed how inclusive the implementation of the design has been with the criteria provided by the UDL framework. The students’ observations provided information on the extent that the implementation faithfully followed the plan and how it contributed to the gradual elimination of barriers to learning. Following a reflective stance, the researcher attempted to overcome these obstacles and to shed more light on the teacher's knowledge of the importance of each individual guideline of the UDL framework for the successful planning of the music lesson. The challenges encountered regarding multiple options for representation, action and expression were highlighted. The role of student self-regulation and engagement needed to be given due importance. During the implementation, an attempt was also made to readjust the objectives. The conclusions of the research also concern calculating the time available for the implementation of the plan.
