Abstract
This study discusses the phenomenon of femicides in Greece from 2020 to
2023. During the initial waves of the Covid-19 pandemic, femicides gained
increased attention as the number of cases rose. Simultaneously, as femicide
incidents escalated, the issue entered the public discourse. As a
consequence, the term "femicide" gained acceptance; however, it was met
with reactions and misunderstandings. The objective of this paper is to gain a
deeper understanding of the distinct and intricate crime of femicide by
presenting recorded Greek cases from 2020 to 2023—a crime that specifically
targets individuals identifying as female. Additionally, the paper examines how
femicides are addressed in Greece, a country that has ratified the Istanbul
Convention and implemented measures to protect women but has not
formally recognized femicide as a distinct crime.
