Abstract
The thesis that is presented in the following pages investigates the co-existence of fictional and non-fictional elements within the creation of an experimental short film. From a theoretical viewpoint, it discusses the relation between fiction, documentary and experimental film. By analyzing genres, such as docufiction, city symphonies and post-war experimental cinema, one examines the work of important directors who created new cinematic forms of artistic expression. On a practical level, the experimental short film that was created for the purposes of this thesis is analyzed in four parts: directing, screenwriting, sound design and editing.
