Abstract
This dissertation aims to examine the level of knowledge of Greek seafarers with regard to sustainable development in the area of shipping, as well as awareness and views on matters related alternative fuels. The sample consisted of 140 active seafarers, working in the largest Greek port, Piraeus and in some of the marines of Greece, in order to allow for the largest possible generalization of the results reached. The dissertation makes reference to Laws, Rules and Conventions which are related to education and alternative fuels in shipping as well as to the curriculum of the public marine education deriving from International Rules and Conventions. Data analysis shows that, the seafarers are satisfied with the knowledge and training provided in both the Public Marine Education and the Shipping Companies. However, they seems to have very limited knowledge of the issues related to sustainable development and the importance of alternative fuels in modern and greener shipping practice.
