Abstract
This work aims to highlight the historical appreciation of the institution of marriage in Greek society, through the data of the Greek Statistical Authority and the Archive of the largest Metropolis of Greece, the Holy Archdiocese of Athens. Marriage contributes to the formation of the family which is a fundamental cell of society and to the succession of the human race through the reproductive process. Marriage is also a transition of the couple to a new reality, which includes additional obligations as well as family responsibilities. As for the institution of the Orthodox church, it considers marriage a great mystery that leads the couple to spiritual perfection.
Historical Demography by examining the evolution of marriage (religious and political), the appearance of cohabitation and the rise of divorces, creates new perspectives for social re-evaluation, for class upgrading which in turn bring about significant changes in the demographic area.
