Abstract
In this study, the soundscape of the National Garden of Athens is analysed retrospectively, documenting the everyday lives of the frequenters of the garden throughout the years. Firstly, there is a mention on the World Soundscape Project (WSP) and the development of the urban acoustic environment. Then, observations are made on other research on park soundscapes and finally the concepts of noise, annoyance and noise pollution are introduced. The tools that were used for the present qualitative research were: semi-structured interviews, Sound Pressure Level Measurements (dB – SPL), Researcher notes και Soundscape recordings. The themes that occurred from the analysing the interviews are : “The psychological uplift through a walk in the park», «The contact with nature in the city», «Sounds of the park's soundscape», «The effect of "new" technology on the listener of the soundscape», «The problem of noise pollution and suggestions for dealing with it» From this research, the incapability of the modern human to focus their listening into something specific arose as an issue, due to the increase of technology. The bird and water sounds and the general acoustic comfort that the gardens provide, seem to have a highly calming effect on the visitors.
