Abstract
In the present qualitative study the occupational identity of music student teachers is being investigated, as it is perceived by them. For research purposes twelve students of the Music Education sector of a Greek Music Studies Department were asked to express how they feel about their occupational identity by identifying the factors which they believe have contributed to its formation. The data were collected using semi-structured interviews and then were analysed thematically. The research findings show that both internal and external factors co-shape the music teacher identity, with the most common of them being students’ experiences in music teaching and learning, the University community, the University courses and the order in which they are placed in the curriculum, the students’ self-image and their activity regarding the strengthening of their identity and other personal internal motivations. It turned out that the University can affect to some extent the characteristics that the students’ identity will have, but a large part of it is due to their own contribution. Finally, suggestions are made for future research on the formation of future music educators’ occupational identity, in which the results of this research may be useful.
