Abstract
This doctoral dissertation includes: 1) the musical theater Oedipus Sélas (Project I), 2) the choreodrama Oedipus Sélas (Project II), 3) the paper that supplements the artistic part of my doctoral dissertation. The main axis of the original musical composition is, on the one hand, the search for the meaning of the tragic through the relationship between Oedipus and Jocasta and, on the other hand, the transfer of this philosophical predisposition to musical material and stage action. The first work, lasting eighty-one minutes divided into two acts, contains all those elements related to contemporary music theater and make it a genre alive and constantly evolving. It is written for ensemble, voices of main roles, mixed choir, and features a narrator, a male dancer (the role of Oedipus) and a group of three female dancers. The second performance, lasting forty minutes, is a four-part choreodrama, which draws all the musical material from the first work, but it is four solo strings with electronics. The musical material is based on two pillars, one is that of the 12 equal temperament tuning of the musical instruments and the second is that of recorded electronic material that moves at non-equal tempered frequencies and has been structured by an autonomous system based on the ratios between some selected relationships within the harmonic serie. The aim of this thesis is to search – through the blending of different sources of musical material and the interaction of different performing arts – the aspects that make Oedipus a wanderer through the centuries.
