Abstract
Music theory lessons follow a theoretical way of teaching, often tend to students with theoretical knowledge that they find difficult to apply in practice when participating in musical ensembles such as chorus, symphonic orchestra, band. The philharmonic societies of Corfu offer music theory and instrument lessons in order to join the band. This research attempts to study the effectiveness of an experiential way of teaching music theory to students of philharmonic society of the city of Corfu. The design of the research includes four stages. In the first two stages, semi-structured interviews and informal conversational interviews took place with the band masters and music theory teachers of the philharmonic societies of the city of Corfu. In the third stage, 11 students participated at
the pilot application of an experiential way of learning, where three courses focused on rhythmic issues, were implemented.
The results of the pilot application showed that the experiential way of teaching
can be more effective in reading the score and has the potential for direct and permanent results for the pupils. The contribution of this research to musical pedagogy lies in the fact that it attempts to investigate the effectiveness of experiential teaching through movement and embodiment of the rhythm in music theory, while at the same time its conclusions concern not only the philharmonic societies of Corfu but also conservatories, music schools and other music education venues where the lesson of music theory is taught.
