Abstract
Attic forensic speeches serve as the primary source of knowledge for ancient Greek law. This paper presents acritical analysis of one of Isaeus’ forensic speeches titled “On the Inheritance of Niconstratus”. The case revolves around inheritance law, showcasing the rhetorical skill of the orator while providing valuable insights into legislation in Ancient Athens.
The introduction provides essential information to the reader about the types of rhetorical speeches, key characteristics of forensic speeches, and the biography of Isaeus, including his surviving speeches. The structure of the speech is then outlined, with the orator organizing the main parts into the introduction, narration, proofs (evidence), and conclusion. An overview of these sections is provided, along with an analysis of the key points in each section to make the content of the text comprehensible.
On the occasion of the evidence that emerges from the examined speech and the bibliographical sources, answers are given to critical research questions related to the inheritance and the status of wills in those years.
The critical analysis covers the fundamental characteristics of the speech, focusing on the methods and means of persuasion, as well as the rhetorical devices employed.
The last section consolidates the conclusions drawn from the analysis of the examined speech, presenting the reader with a summary of the final thoughts of the research.
