Abstract
During the recent years, Greece has been providing shelter for refugees and asylum seekers from Eastern countries, who are under war or poverty conditions. The Greek government, additionally to civilian initiatives, offers support to these families, primarily on matters of basic needs for their survival. Thus, the education of refugee people is also a priority for institutions and other organizations, targeting at their integration to society.
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the role of music classes in refugee children’s everyday life in refugee shelters. Since a significant number of these children have received little or no official education, music classes serve cognitive, developmental and social needs, while offering an expressive mean for coping with the negative consequences of war.
This specific paper presents ethnographically, through participatory observation and systematic on-spot and reflective recording, the social role of music classes for refugee children from 2 to 16 years old, explained according to the thematic analysis. The results of the research reveal that group singing and participation in music activities ameliorate refugee’s social skills, while providing the necessary conditions for their smooth integration to the official school system.
