Abstract
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is an educational framework of principles and guidelines for the development of flexible learning environments. It is based on the concept of inclusion and argues that the needs of all students should be taken into account from the outset of planning (Meyer & Rose, 2005). This paper explores the implementation of UDL in the teaching of music in preschool. The research questions were: a) How can UDL be implemented as an educational tool in the teaching of music in preschool? b) Which information on the application and effectiveness of UDL can be derived from its implementation? Specifically, a teaching module for music lessons was designed, which was based on principles and guidelines of UDL and also on basic principles for teaching and learning in preschool music education. This teaching module was implemented through eight lessons, in a pre-K classroom (4-5 year-olds) of a kindergarten. The group consisted of typical children with a few exhibiting learning difficulties. For this educational case study (Robson, 2010), the lessons were videotaped, transcribed and analyzed together with other research tools, such as semi-structured interview and teacher observation sheets. The analysis has shown that several tools for organizing lessons according to UDL guidelines can be described as effective. Yet, there exist various factors that affect the results of such an implementation and they are linked to the framework and educational conditions within which it is applied. Such factors appear to be timeline, previous implementations of UDL in that field, the curriculum, and educators’ cooperation while planning. Despite the limitations attached to a case study, it seems that UDL is a promising framework for education. However, there is a need for further and in greater detail research, to clarify the benefits of UDL and to analyze the ways of its practical application in preschool educational settings.
