Abstract
The question regarding the status of women in Muslim countries is a
burning issue of particular concern to the academic and scientific community,
especially within the female gender. The expansion of the feminist movement and
the sensibilization of contemporary society regarding the equality, treatment and
rights of women globally have brought women of the East to the forefront. Women
in Muslim countries do not enjoy the same treatment or rights. Afghanistan and
Saudi Arabia are two countries of particular interest for both the similarities and
differences they share. Within the context of the presented thesis, the lifestyle of
women in Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia are clearly distinguished, focusing on
different areas of their lives such as education, work, freedom of movement and
health care. The primary objective has been to present and highlight without bias
the quality of life of these women, the progress and accomplishments they have
achieved, unknown to many, the violation and abuse of their rights and freedoms,
as well as the gender-based violence and discrimination they suffer on a daily
basis. This project, however, is not only an independent presentation of the position
of women and their rights, but also an attempt to demystify some de facto views
that dominate the Western perception of Islam and the values it really stands for,
especially regarding the position of women.
