Abstract
This dissertation explores the development of Modern Art through the analysis and comparison of work by some of the greatest exponents of early and mid-20th century art movements, from Suprematism to Minimalism. I go on to unfold Modern Art through the art movements of Suprematism, Dadaism, De Stijl, Bauhaus, Surrealism, Art Deco, Constructivism, Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art and Minimalism. Most importantly, I address the rise and fall of the Russian Avant-garde and how Malevich and the Suprematism movement were born. Malevich's relationship with Suprematism and the modern elements that the artist introduced, are examined by analyzing his art works. Emphasis is placed on the Black Square. Moreover, I turn to two great modern sculptors, Brancusi and Giacometti, who laid the foundations of Minimalism by creating their own dialectic. Next, I give a detailed account of the Minimalism movement through the art works of David Smith, Tony Smith, Dan Flavin, Donald Judd, Frank Stella, and Sol Lewit. I also research and develop the reasons behind the Minimalists’ return to Malevich and his ideology, by analyzing and comparing the artworks of artists of American Minimalism, American Abstract Expressionism, Brancusi and Giacometti. A separate aim of the study has been to undertake a case study analysis of the very different structures and range of techniques reflected in Malevich's art works and how these influenced later art movements, especially Minimalism. The study ends with the observation that Malevich has exerted a greater influence on art movements of the time than has hitherto been recognized.
