Abstract
The relationship between the European Union and the United Kingdom has always been considered of crucial importance, since both have shaped and continue to shape the European economy and culture. Within the Union, there are various fields that someone can work with. One of these is the legal language used in the legislative procedures of the Union. The aim of this dissertation is to compare and contrast two different legal languages and investigate how different laws are created based on two different legal systems, the British and the European one. Legal language has always been a fascinating and complex issue since no clear-cut definition can be given. As a result, the present study undertakes a comparative analysis of two legal systems as far as the linguistic means used are concerned. By comparing and analysing the two types of law, a new perspective is presented. The two texts under analysis were chosen to be as similar as possible on grounds of context, language and reasoning. Moreover, linguistic terms were selected in order to provide a clearer idea of what legal language is and how it is employed in the European legal procedures and the ones in the United Kingdom.
