Abstract
This thesis seeks to highlight the policies and mechanisms of assimilation used by the Greek state in the interwar period towards the Slavic-speaking populations of Greek Macedonia in order to achieve their Hellenization on the one hand and the imposition of a new national identity on these populations on the other. It examines the diplomatic and historical context in which the demographic transformation of Macedonia took place, as well as the transformation of Slavophones into national subjects. Particular emphasis is given to the presentation of the educational policy pursued by the interwar governments towards the Slavophones. Furthermore, an attempt is made to link assimilationist policies with the effects they had on the public and private lives of ordinary people, to highlight the silenced aspects of this assimilationist process.
