Abstract
The main objective of this research was to identify and document the main challenges faced
by interpreters who work in mental health settings in Greece and offer their services to
refugees, asylum seekers and migrants. The psychological support provided to interpreters by their workplace and the training they should receive before they start working as interpreters in the mental health sector were also topics of the present research. A qualitative approach was employed and structured interviews with five interpreters working in non-governmental organisations providing psychological and/or psychiatric support to refugees, asylum seekers and migrants were conducted. Three main challenges were identified: a) language and terminology, b) emotional burden, c) working with mental health professionals and beneficiaries. The interviews also highlighted some gaps in the support that interpreters receive from their workplace and the problem of lack of training for interpreters who learn to interpret from experience and without having received adequate training.
