Abstract
This dissertation focuses on interlingual subtitling for the deaf and hard of hearing and more specifically on music description in written mode, due to the fact that it is still an area where research is lacking. Using the Greek interlingual subtitles provided in the DVD of the movie Dunkirk as a template, Greek interlingual subtitles were created, adjusted for an audience of deaf and hard of hearing while applying as systematic and detailed descriptions for music as possible. This process is then analyzed through a commentary on the difficulties experienced and the solutions applied, followed by a comparison of the total number of subtitles and the number of subtitles per minute in the interlingual subtitles used as a template and the interlingual subtitles created to target the deaf and hard of hearing audience. Based on this analysis, it is concluded that interlingual subtitles for hearing audiences are not fit to cater for the needs of the deaf and hard of hearing, while the condensation imposed on subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing due to lower reading rates and additional information to be included, do not allow for verbatim transcription of the dialogues; adjustment is necessary if the aim is accessibility and comprehension. Finally, it is recommended that research with an audience is carried out in order to see whether more detailed music descriptions are welcomed by the deaf and hard of hearing and aid their appreciation of the film or if the additional strain of reading them has the opposite effect.
