Abstract
Climate change is without any doubt one of the greatest challenges that humanity has ever
encountered. It is commonly accepted that this phenomenon has already caused tremendous
consequences to the planet and has therefore influenced the human life as well. The climate
crisis does not simply constitute another natural event and should thus not be approached with
such mentality. The human factor has, amongst other external parameters, critically impacted
the escalation of the climate issue. Despite some of the obvious effects of this crisis on
humanity, it has been observed that the majority of people have insufficient knowledge around
the environmental matters and have failed to acknowledge the significance that personal
accountability holds. Aproaching this aspect of environmental unawareness through musical
education can potentially influence the way humans process this crisis reinforcing their sense
of responsibility towards the environment. Provided that the theoretical and critical analysis of
the role of music in climate change is currently limited, I consider an imperative need and
responsibility of the musician and music-educator to use the potential and influence of their
art, in order to contribute to the exposure of students to the climate emergency.
