Abstract
Almost two hundred years from their first edition the Grimms’ “Nursery and Household Tales” are still a fertile ground for research concerning their translation based on cultural elements as well as social, political, financial and pshychological needs of different nations and cultures. Equally interesting is the fact that the two brothers wished their collection to be used not only as means of promotion of the past and the oral tradition, but also as a manual for children’s behavior. This was the reason behind every change and adaptation, in order to make the fairy tales appropriate for children. However, what is the general opinion which prevails in the contemporary educational world about the tales’ pedagogical utilization? Why they are being translated until today and in what level is their translation affected due to pedagogical, social and cultural conditions of the modern era we are going through? Focusing on the questions mentioned above the present thesis tries to examine the beliefs of translators and primary school teachers about violence, gender and social status discrimination in the translation of Grimms’ tales. More specifically, this quantitative research was implemented using two different questionnaires which ask basic questions to translators and teachers related to violence, gender and social status discrimination in these fairy tales and how the translation of these elements is affected by the factors of orality and target-group. Finally, the results of the research are listed and discussed in comparison to the foundings of other surveys, mentioned in international and Greek bibliography.
