Abstract
The aim of this thesis is to study the translation of humor in the subtitling process. The translation of humor is challenging for the translator mainly because of the problems that arise due to the different cultural contexts in which the humor occurs. For this thesis, we subtitled the British stand-up comedy show "Fame" by Ricky Gervais and translated a part of it. First, we explain the type of comedy in the context of which we chose to study humor, which is the stand-up comedy. We give a short definition of the stand-up comedy, its characteristics and its subject matter and at the same time we give also a short description of the stand-up actor. Then we refer to the difficulties arising from the translation of humor in general and then to the difficulties arising from the limitations posed by subtitling as a process. Finally, we analyze some examples of humor from the stand-up show and explain the translation technique we chose.
