Abstract
The present study attempts to explore the evolution structure of the music listening approach proposed by Campbell as a means of enhancing the critical thinking of pupils. A fourth stage focused on critical listening was added to the three stages of music listening for the purposes of this investigation. At this fourth yet phase of the listening, children were asked to express their opinions through ‘open’ targeted questions. Five courses were held in which five selected listening examples including lyrics were reproduced. The research attempted to ensure that the content of the listening stages (activities, musical orientations, listening maps) was as close as possible to the Campbell's guidelines, in order to establish their contribution to the Critical listening phase. The theoretical background of the application is based on the theory of critical literacy as well as the theoretical approach of critical pedagogy of Freire. There are references to ways of approaching the listening in the music lesson by pedagogues such as Hargreaves, Elliott and Langer and an extensive reference to the three stages of Campbell's listening. The results showed a direct link between the listening stages proposed by Campbell and the critical listening.
