Abstract
This diploma thesis was written in the context of my undergraduate studies at the Department of Foreign Languages, Translation and Interpreting (DFLTI) of the Ionian University and marks the end of my studies at the Department.
This diploma thesis presents a direct translation and the commentary of the translation process from English (source language) to Greek (target language). This text “Our General Terms and Conditions of Carriage”, which is part of the policy of Air Canada, Canada's largest airline and a founding member of the Star AllianceTM, sets out the airline's policy for the operation of its services. The thesis is addressed to those who wish to be informed about the carrier's policy. The text mentions the rights of passengers under the Air Passenger Protection Regulations in case they face problems such as denied boarding, flight delays or cancellations, lost or damaged baggage.
Moreover, the structure of the thesis is simple with the translated text in Greek listed at the beginning followed by the original text in English. Finally, the structure of the thesis does not lack the analytical commentary of the translation process that was followed with the translation difficulties that arose and their following solutions as well as the bibliography used for the preparation of this diploma thesis.
The preparation of this thesis was a very demanding and productive process, but at the same time an experience that brought me closer to the realistic working conditions of a translator, because through the difficulties that arose it became necessary to take initiatives, consistency, and responsibility of my choices, taking advantage of the available resources, aiming at the best possible rendering of the text in the target language.
