Abstract
Despite its global significance and moral authority, the universality of human rights is challenged by diverse cultural perspectives, particularly those prevalent in non-Western societies. These perspectives generate discussions and controversies surrounding the interpretation and application of human rights, as some of these societies question their origin and relevance in relation to their own worldviews and cultural values, perceiving them as potentially imposed by external forces. Through a comprehensive qualitative and interdisciplinary literature review, the present research aims to contribute to the discourse surrounding the interplay between cultural relativism and universalism concerning human rights. The thesis examines instances of incompatibility between universal human rights norms and the cultural values of non-Western societies, particularly those within African and Asian contexts. Furthermore, acknowledging the dynamic nature of cultures and their susceptibility to internal and external influences, as well as the political struggle for control over cultural resources and symbols, the research seeks to shed light on other interrelated factors contributing to the incompatibility between universal human rights principles and culturally diverse contexts. Finally, by advocating for a nuanced understanding of cultural awareness and sensitivity within the human rights discourse, esteemed scholars' approaches are selected to be presented to offer potential avenues for resolving conflicts between human rights standards and specific cultural traditions.
