Abstract
Music Performance Anxiety (MPA) has been described as one of the most important problems associated with performing music in front of an audience and is characterized by fear. It affects both professional musicians and students. The purpose of this study was to investigate the anxiety of stage performance in adolescent wind instrument musicians in the context of a Band. Specifically, the research focused on the factors that determine the stress of stage performance of adolescent musicians, on how the condition of participation of adolescents shapes anxiety as well as on the ways of coping they use to control and deal with it. The sample consisted of 9 adolescent wind-instrument players, ages 12 to 18 years old, boys and girls, students of a Band. The data was collected through individual, semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic content analysis. The results of the research showed that constant exposure to the public can gradually reduce stress. Also, most musicians mentioned that the solo stage presence makes them feel more exposed and insecure, as opposed to performing with an ensemble. Regarding the preparation for dealing with the stress of stage performance during the lessons, it was mentioned that although the climate is familiar and there is largely mental support from the teacher of the musical instrument, there does not seem to be information or other type of methodical preparation. Finally, regarding the importance of the personality traits of adolescents, it seems that more introverted musicians feel more anxiety on stage.
