Abstract
This dissertation aims at tracing, concentrating and assessing the legislation governing vocational education of music professional performers in Greece due to its lack of proper codification up to now. The corpus of the relevant Greek legislation is organized as a law toolkit, arranged by topic and year of publication. The body of the legal provisions that have been included are associated with educational processes, that aim at teaching of musical instruments, vocal arts and conducting/directing of music ensembles, with the final goal to shape a whole music personality, capable of being professionally active as orchestra and/or ensemble members and/or solists.
At the core of the thesis the law and legislative frame of the diverse musical agencies from the foundation of the Modern Greek State (1833) up to now is investigated, including also those established in the broader Greek jurisdiction (Ionian State). From these agencies one can discern Athens Conservatoire (1871), State Conservatory Thessaloniki (1914) and the Depts of Music Studies in higher education (1984). The main issues that have emerged are the lack of gradation of the degrees granted by conservatories and music school, the lack of vocational or academic correspondence, the complete disdain for the multi-year studies and the incompatibility with EU law. On the contrary, studying at academic music departments is aligned with the European standards (Bologna Process) and ends in receiving degrees corresponding to the 6th, 7th and 8th level of the European Qualifications Framework.
The conclusions of the dissertation aim at contributing to research and discussion regarding the development of a whole and modern legal frame, having the potential to meet sufficiently the educational needs of the students, protecting concurrently their vocational rights as music performers.
