Abstract
The spread of the COVID–19 pandemic has caused abruptly an unprecedented crisis in the
global social, economic and political scenes. As a consequence of the pandemic, new realities have risen up and, reasonably, political discourse and rhetoric could not remain unaffected. Instead, they changed in order to listen to their people, gain their trust and, ultimately, manage the pandemic. German political discourse has made a 180-degree turn and now presents the politician as sender and responsible for protecting the people’s health. Federal President, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, addresses to his citizens as an equal, uses a parental tone like a father figure, focuses on their psychological and physical health as well as values and ideals such as solidarity and compassion. He shows that he is fully aware of the peoples’ situation and the needs that have arisen and shares their pain. Therefore, both German and global political discourse have changed their structure, style and content in order to show empathy towards the people.
