Abstract
The current paper aims to detail the emergence and spread of fencing in Modern Greece. Through the historical events that led to the formation of the Modern Greek State, an attempt is made to thematically present, both as a whole and in part, the phenomenon of people’s engagement with fencing. A means of martial preparedness, serving justice and settling matters by combat, an entertainment privilege of male urban sociability and ultimately a sport with an ever-growing number of fans as time goes on, from the first modern Olympics to modern times.
In the case of Corfu, this is nothing more than an attempt to record the progression of the sport on the island, using all surviving resources of its recorded activity from the dawn of the 20th century up to the start of the Second World War, when all fencing activity ceases for four decades, as well as live personal accounts of those who experienced and are – in some way – actively engaged in the sport, from the early eighties to this day. The research, which has been conducted through one-on-one interviews, offers not only information about the sporting and competitive history of fencing at a local level and its dependence on Athens-centric decisions, but also a reflection on the degree of interaction of socio-economic variables in relation to the evolution and, in essence, the survival of the sport in this small, yet historically rich corner of Greece.
