Abstract
This practice-based study examines mythical narration as it is shaped by the mediums available to modern day’s creators. It researches the ways that the art of projection mapping contributes to the composition of a visual performance and also delves into the qualities of digital light and the way it emerges as the dominant creative medium of the time. The art of projection mapping is then employed to produce “Persephone’s Fall’, a dance and projection performance based on the myth of Persephone. This research intends to contribute to the body of knowledge about the under-researched topic of projection mapping, by showing the intercorrelation of in-depth conceptual and practical exploration of this medium.
The myth as presented in the Homeric Hymn “To Demeter”, embodies the Jungian archetypal Mother-Daughter dipole, as well as the endless cycle of Birth, Death, And Rebirth. The symbolic and psychological aspects of mythology are examined in order to better understand the primordial beliefs of mankind, which are reflected in the myth of Persephone. An in-depth understanding of digital light as a medium that forms spatially augmented realities through the art of mapping projection develops in the second part of theoretical analysis.
Through the creation of "Persephone's Fall", mapping projection was proved to optimize the degree of immersion into the artistic experience by creating a level of interaction between space, digital light and performer, and through it, successfully communicating the content of the narrative. With technical study and practical application, a new work of art was created that functions as a digital reflection of the primitive rituals of the Eleusinian Mysteries, always keeping in focus the myth of Persephone and Persephone herself as the narrator.
