Abstract
Oud, a musical instrument with a deep history, is today an instrument in the musical
tradition of many civilizations. It is considered to be rooted in Central Asia and it has
spread both in East and West, even though it is not played with the same techniques and
the repertoire is different across the world. This thesis attempts to trace back its
geographical journey and most specifically the one towards the west, with a motivation to
attribute the deeper causes of this movement. At a first level, the geopolitical and historical
evolution of the musical civilizations that include oud as their instrument was studied. At
a second level, socio-political characteristics were evaluated, such as the symbolism of the
instrument and its role in local communities, before and after globalization, as well as the
musical theoretical systems which it served. In Greece, oud is nowadays considered to be a
traditional musical instrument. This has not always been the case. Through political
changes in a global level, such as the first World War and the population exchange that
followed, but also through a rebirth process initiated in recent years by scholars and
young musicians, oud will eventually find its place in the music scene of Greece.
