Abstract
How does organizing a Wikipedia edit-a-thon on Greek women artists contribute to increasing their presence in the encyclopedia? This is the central question which this thesis attempts to answer. Its aim is to highlight the lack of information about Greek women artists, to promote their work on Greek and English Wikipedia, and to enrich it, making the information free and accessible. Why are we so interested in organizing a Wikipedia edit-a-thon on Greek women artists? Why are we so interested in organizing a Wikipedia entry marathon on Greek artists? It is neither a matter of nationalism, nor a matter of feminism. It is a matter of justice and visibility. The need to improve the presence of Greek women artists in Greek and English Wikipedia arises from the realization that this presence is quite limited. Research shows that the percentage of women contributing to Wikipedia is dramatically low compared to that of men, and that the nature of its content is biased in favour of the male gender. This issue is known as the "gender gap". Since its discovery various campaigns have been created worldwide within Wikipedia, aimed at bridging it and increasing the visibility of women and their contributions. This goal is achieved by organizing authoring and editing marathons, known as "edit-a-thons".
