Abstract
The dissertation elaborates the philosophical and musical thought of Greek avant-garde composer Jani Christou (1926-1970), as deprived from his manuscripts, most of which remained unpublished until today. It constitutes the first attempt to bring together the composer’s writings, which are found in his personal archive in various forms; sketches, notes, drafts, appendices and programmatic notes, correspondence, interviews and other forms (testimonies, audio documents etc.). From these emanates the philosophical aspect of Christou’s musical contemplation, which is inextricably bound up with the circumstances under which a music work was conceived and realised as well as his sonic innovations were devised. The thesis also features an extensive exposition of the musical, philosophical and wider intellectual and artistic environment from which the composer originates and within which he acted and interacted. As a result of an research in primary sources, there are included a complete catalogue of works and an updated biographical note, for which all unsubstantial and arbitrary information regarding his studies, his works and the so-called “lost works”, underwent an exhaustive investigation.
