Abstract
Given that, especially in modern communities, education is an important aspect of human activity, the history of which can inform scholars and researchers about a series of issues and concerns that interest each community. Along these lines, the United States’ of the Ionian Islands public education system consists of an institution that concentrates a series of political, social and ideological realities, which moved the interest of the Heptanese during the transitional 19th century. Additionally, it is one of the institutions of the protectorate, where the interactions of the British, the Ionians and foreigners were significantly effective. Despite of the conflicting fields that were provoked by the different visions of each sector, regarding the nature of the educational process, the public education of the Heptanese can be regarded as ultimately successful. To put it into perspective, a three-tier system was formed, in which there was special care put into the primary and secondary tiers. But what is certain, is that the peak of the system was its higher tier. This tier was marked by the operation of the first university in the broader area of the East Mediterranean: the Ionian Academy.
