Abstract
This thesis is aiming to analyze the translation of humor through the Greek subtitles of the American television series FRIENDS. The first chapter refers to the theory of humor, giving emphasis on the verbal humor, as well as providing useful information about the form of Linguistic Theory of Humor and the Analysis Parameters of humorous texts. It is a purely theoretical chapter, which lays the foundation for understanding the comic elements. The second chapter focuses on subtitling theory and on the types of jokes using real examples from the show. General information is given about the genre of the series (Sitcom), the plot and the characters, and a comparison is taking place between two pairs of Greek subtitles. This comparison leads to interesting facts and conclusions concerning the era that subtitles were created and raise the issue of retranslation, arising in every written text. In this chapter, the theory is applied to real jokes and a comparison is made between official subtitles from two different media (television channel and streaming service) in juxtaposition to the original text. The thesis is concluded with the joke appendix appearing in a three-column table that provides a direct comparison between the script and all of it’s Greek translations.
