Abstract
Academic libraries traditionally are agencies for the development and management of knowledge and science. The introduction of new technologies in the field of description and presentation of their bibliographic and thematic data is nowadays one of the most important problems faced by librarians. New data models for the representation of information on the web (RDF, SPARQL, SKOS) are developed along with cataloging and indexing (MARC21, Thesaurus) standards that libraries use to help promote and propagate their repositories on the semantic web, by participating in the Linked Open Data world movement.
In this paper, an attempt is made to experiment to see in practice the new possibilities that LOD technology offers to libraries and their degree of coverage in the Library of the Ionian University where we look. Specific suggestions are made to select the appropriate data models (RDF, SPARQL) and ontologies (SKOS) for describing the thematic catalogue data of the Library of the Ionian. In an experimental RDF export of three of the standard names and thematic terms of the database, we attempted simply by querying the SPARQL query language to see if the terms were interconnected with the corresponding terms of other libraries.
