Abstract
In various countries abroad, the inclusion of music in Correctional Institutions is supported by private organizations, which organize a variety of musical interventions, such as music production and composition projects, the creation of choirs, etc. In Greece, the involvement of people in custody in music is carried out through the educational structures operating within the Correctional Institutions and through voluntary or privately funded activities. The educational structures within the Correctional Institutions are mainly limited to the Second Chance Schools, of which there are only twelve. Music in the Second Chance Schools is part of a course - or literacy, as they are called within the SCSs - called Cultural-Aesthetic Education, sometimes undertaken by music teachers. There is ample literature on the inclusion of music in Correctional Institutions abroad, while research studies are constantly increasing. However, there are very few studies that relate to the Greek reality or that are written in the Greek language. The present qualitative research examines the contribution of the inclusion of music in Correctional Institutions, the problems faced by musicians during their employment and the conditions that can enhance the smooth functioning of music education and music activities in these contexts. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews, during which four music teachers and four community musicians from different parts of Greece shared their views, their experiences and the challenges they faced during their involvement in Correctional Institutions.
