Abstract
This research examines the combination of acoustic musical instrument, especially the flute, with the Electroacoustic Music field. The way audio and electronic sound correlates with mixed electroacoustic music.
This project is structured in two individual stages:
In the first phase, a research framework was created to search for the relevant repertoire historically, with the aim of finding and categorising as many of such works as possible. This repertoire functioned as a basis for the classification of these works and then as a starting point for the selection of some of these in order to be studied in depth aiming to organizing their interpretative approaches and eventually presenting them in concerts. The selection of works to be analysed and performed were realised according to the gradual change and evolution of electronic means, the style of the period, their musical content and the expansion of the flute performing techniques.
In the second phase, which is the main part of this research, the above-mentioned selected repertoire becomes a point of reference for an investigation of the relation between the flute and electronically created sonic spaces consisting of audio material, prerecorded and/or processed in real time. For this, a series of original works were composed in collaboraton with A. Loufopoulos which were studied in terms of their interpative approaches, prepared for production, presented in concerts and published. This research has revealed various problems whose original solutions might contribute, on one hand, to enrich the interpretation approaches of flute within environments of electroacoustically produced sound spaces and, on the other, to propose fruitful collaboration between acoustic instruments (and particularly the flute) and electronic sound producing media at the level of composition.
In addition, the original work that emerged enriches the existing repertoire for flute-and-electronics and contributes to the understanding of the interpretative approaches of using the flute in the context of mixed electro-acoustic music.
