Abstract
In March 2020, piano teachers, and students from conservatories all across the country, were forced to move to a new online learning environment due to social constraints and the closure of all educational units due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. This qualitative study will attempt to analyse student’s experience of distance learning, as well as the teacher’s experience of the new teaching conditions, and how the period of absence during the pandemic affected the interpersonal relationships between music teachers and students. The study involves 8 piano students aged 12 to 20, and 6 piano teachers who taught online during the pandemic. The participants were selected from three different geographical areas of Greece, some were from islands, some from an urban center and some from the Greek province. The data shows how the teachers taught piano using new technologies, the challenges they faced, the emotional reactions of both sides, the way the students managed the new learning environment, the contribution of the family environment and finally the formation of interpersonal relationships between participants. One of the most interesting parts, is that the teachers and students were able to maintain their contact and communication, despite the adverse conditions.
