Abstract
This thesis investigates the information behavior of Greek astronomers, aiming at the development of a targeted model information literacy program. For the first time, Wilson’s macro-model of information seeking behavior (Wilson, 2006) was applied to the information behavior of astronomers and, subsequently, astronomy undergraduate students. The primary data collected at the two stages of the survey and the comparison of the results led to the formulation of specifications for programs, aiming at improving information skills of potentially future astronomers based on the information requirements of this exact scientific community.
The formulated specifications have been applied to a pilot project implemented in high school students, as a preparation for their transition to the academic research environment and, in particular, to the specificities of the astronomy field. Modern standards and methods of Information Science and Pedagogy were utilized and combined for the implementation of the program. Also, based on the principles of the Participatory Action Research, the information behavior of high school students was examined, and proved to be analogous to that of the undergraduate students.
The results of the dissertation highlight the necessity to prepare high-school seniors for tertiary education through targeted information literacy programs and to integrate libraries in the educational process.
