Abstract
The importance and the significance of the archives cannot be underestimated. The rich and valuable information they provide is very important for History, Sociology, Demography and for many other fields of Science. On top of these, they are also one of the means for cultivating the national memory and identity.
Among the archival material of special interest are the Civil Registry Books since they provide abundant evidence and enrich our knowledge about various aspects of the human life throughout the centuries. This valuable information includes the people' s social status, their professions, their mentality about the birth, the baptism, the marriage and the death, the meaning that they gave to their life and every other view developed in any village or town-society or in a parochial group and even more among the limits of an island.
Taking into account the above-mentioned framework, the present study was undertaken with the following subject matter: “The Civil Registry Books of the Parochial church of Holy Trinity (Hagia Triada) at the Village of Katzoulianika, Potamos, Kythera (1752-1865)”. The study focuses on the transcription of the four Civil Registry Books which have been kept at the Local state Archives at the island of Kythera, Greece. The transcriptions are accompanied by several footnotes so that the reader could better understand the content of these books. Totally 752 acts of baptisms, marriages and deaths have been transcribed and also some other brief texts regarding memoirs, ratifications and acts of delivering a Registry Book to a parochial priest by the local civil authorities.
Before the catalogue of the acts, an introduction with the historical framework has been written. The description of the Local State Archives and their content with special refence to the Civil Registry material has been added. In addition, the material, the appearance and the content of the four Civil Registry Books have been thoroughly analyzed including the overall picture that emerges from the study of the small community at the village of Katzoulianika in Kythera.
