Abstract
This paper covers the subject of the (un)translatability of humour in audiovisual translation and specifically in subtitling. Humour is part of everyone's life. However, because of its language and cultural-specific nature, it does not always travel easily. When the difficulties of translating humour meet the technical difficulties of subtitling, the translator's task becomes quite difficult. In this paper we will focus on a specific type of jokes, puns. In order to see if humor actually resists translation, we will analyze a series of puns found in How I met your mother, Friends and Brooklyn 9-9. Through this analysis we will see if and how the puns were transferred to the Greek subtitles and evaluate whether the humour was preserved in the translation.
