Abstract
This dissertation consists of the translation from Greek into English of a legal text and a commentary bearing on the translation process, the main translation difficulties faced and the translation strategies used to address them. The text is an excerpt from the Master’s dissertation written by the lawyer Petros Tsantinis, entitled ‘’The International regulations concerning the freedom of association of seafarers and their adaptation to the rules of International labour conventions’’ and deals with maritime law and the application of International Labour Convention.
Legal translation is a demanding and difficult type of translation. It is a specialized translation that requires precision, accuracy and to some extent a comparative law approach especially when different legal systems are involved. The aim of the target text is to convey the meaning and the information of the original text with as much precision and clarity as possible while effectively addressing terminological and phraseological problems.
