Abstract
The present paper presents the case of interpreters in military operations, specifically in the case of the Greek military. Based on a historical overview and review of international literature, the profile of the interpreters, and ethical issues, which arise from factors, such as working conditions, the interpreter’s identity, their lack of training and various perspectives deriving from their particular situation, are explored. These issues concern principles of neutrality, impartiality and the interpreter’s positionality in the communicational context. Furthermore, the case of interpreters working in Greek military operations in Kosovo and Afghanistan, their work and traits are presented. Finally, the paper offers some possible solutions that can contribute to the improvement of the role of military interpreters.
