Abstract
Global demand for meat is steadily increasing affecting the environment, animal welfare and public health. To address these challenges, artificial meat can be characterized as a promising and alternative solution to traditional livestock farming. This thesis explores the multifaceted dimensions of cultured meat production, its potential to address current food security and ethical concerns, and the broader implications for sustainable food systems. First, the thesis highlights the biotechnological processes involved in growing animal cells in a controlled environment (cell culture), emphasizing the importance of developing appropriate culture media. In addition, it examines challenges related to scale up production, cost efficiency and regulatory frameworks. Social acceptance and consumer perceptions of cultured meat are, also, explored by examining factors influencing public attitudes, potential barriers to consumption of cultured meat, and strategies to promote cultured meat as a sustainable and attractive option for future diets. Finally, the thesis concludes with a discussion of broader implications for cultured meat in the context of global food security and sustainability highlighting its potential role in reducing the environmental footprint of the meat industry, alleviating food shortages and promoting more ethical consumption habits.
