Abstract
Why does Empedocles decide to throw himself into Mount Etna? This is the crucial question that puzzles and inspires German poet and philosopher Friedrich Hölderlin prompting him to attempt to write a tragedy about this mythical, yet philosophically poetic death. Although all three attempts he makes ultimately remain unfinished, the fragments he leaves behind are universally numbered among the greatest poetry ever written in European literature. This paper consists of three parts: it’s a translation and a critical review on previous translations in Greek, as well as a hermeneutical approach of the Hölderlinean mourning-play [Trauerspiel], carried out under a twofold perspective: the relationship between nature and man through art, and the profound dialectic of the Empedoclian poetic cosmology. Excerpts from Empedocles' philosophical reflections (the four “roots” along with the two fundamental cosmic forces, namely Love [Φιλία] and Strife [Νεῖκος]) are being explored in relation to Hölderlin's perception of the tragic, as viewed in the light of his concept of the Intimate (Innigkeit), defining “Der Tod des Empedokles” essentially as no less than a swan song on dialectics.
