Abstract
This study aims to assess the influence of formal education and continuous training on the awareness and implementation of sustainable practices among employees in the Greek hotel industry. The methodology involved a comprehensive questionnaire distributed to a sample of 135 participants from various hotels across Greece. The questionnaire covered demographics, education and training programs, awareness and understanding of sustainability, implementation of sustainable practices, and perceived barriers and facilitators.
The main findings reveal a high level of awareness among hotel employees about sustainable practices and their benefits. Surprisingly, a negative correlation was found between the level of formal education and both the awareness and implementation of sustainable practices. The study also identified clear communication of sustainability goals, resource availability, and a strong sustainability culture as key facilitators for implementing sustainable practices in the industry. In contrast, perceived barriers such as lack of management prioritization and insufficient training were not seen as significant obstacles.
Conclusively, the study suggests that while awareness of sustainability is high, formal education does not necessarily correlate with improved implementation of sustainable practices. This points to a potential gap in the current educational approach towards sustainability in the hotel industry. It highlights the need for more practical, application-focused training and continuous learning to effectively embed sustainable practices in the hotel industry.
